It is the sequel to the game The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kingsplayed in an open world with a third-person perspective. Players control protagonist Geralt of Riviaa monster slayer known as a Witcher who is looking for his missing adopted daughter on the run from the Wild Huntan otherworldly force determined to capture her and use her powers.
Players battle the game's many dangers with weapons and magic, interact with non-player characters, and complete main-story and side quests to acquire experience points and gold, which are used to increase Geralt's abilities and purchase equipment. Its central story has several endings, determined by the player's choices at certain points in the game.
Development began in and lasted for three and a half years. Voice recording took more than two and a half years.
The writing was infused with realistic aspects such as moral ambiguity in an attempt to avoid simplification, impart authenticity, and reflect Sapkowski's novels. Central and Northern European cultures formed the basis of the game's world. REDengine 3 enabled the developer to create a complex story without compromising the game's open world. The game received critical acclaim, with praise for its gameplay, narrative, world design, combat, and visuals, although it received minor criticism due to technical issues.
It received numerous Game of the Year awards and has been cited as one of the best video games ever made. Two expansions were also released to critical acclaim: Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. A Game of the Year edition was released in Augustwith the base game, expansions, and all downloadable content.
It was a commercial success, with the game and its expansions shipping over 28 million copies. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is an action role-playing game with a third-person perspective. Players control Geralt of Riviaa monster slayer known as a Witcher. There are two modes of melee attack; light attacks are fast but weak, and heavy attacks are slow but strong.
They lose health when attacked by enemies, although wearing armour can help reduce health loss. Health is restored with meditation or consumables, such as food and potions. The day-night cycle influences some monsters; a werewolf becomes powerful during the night of a full moon. The game focuses on narrative, and has a dialogue wheel which allows players to choose how to respond to non-player characters. Geralt must make decisions which change the state of the world and lead to 36 possible endings, affecting the lives of in-game characters.
Combat upgrades enhance Geralt's attacks and unlock new fighting techniques; signs upgrades enable him to use magic more efficiently, and alchemy upgrades improve crafting abilities. General upgrades have a variety of functions, from raising Geralt's vitality to increasing crossbow damage.
Geralt can explore each region on foot or by transportation, such as a boat. Roach, his horse, may be summoned at will. The game is set in the Continent, a fantasy world surrounded by parallel dimensions and extra-dimensional worlds. Humans, elves, dwarves, monsters and other creatures co-exist on the Continent, but non-humans are often persecuted for their differences. The main character is the Witcher, Geralt of Rivia Doug Cockle a monster hunter trained since childhood in combat, tracking, alchemy and magic, and made stronger, faster and resistant to toxins by mutagens.
She is unaware that the Emperor is her biological father; he sired her under an assumed name while he was subject to a curse. Geralt rejoins his long-lost lover, Yennefer, in the town of White Orchard.
Yennefer tells him that Emperor Emhyr has summoned him to the city of Vizima. Emhyr tasks Geralt with finding Ciri, who has recently been seen in several places.
Ciri is the daughter of the emperor and the last heir to an ancient elvish bloodline with the power to manipulate space and time. The Crones say that they captured Ciri for the Wild Hunt before she escaped and have enslaved Anna, the baron's missing wife. Geralt returns to the baron, who tells him that Ciri went to Novigrad.
He discovers that the Church of the Eternal Fire, a militant religious organization, is purging mages in Novigrad. Meeting his former lover, Triss Merigold, Geralt learns that Ciri had contacted his friend Dandelion.Because, despite being a dedicated fan of the Witcher series, both in book and game form, this announcement simply had me wondering, well, why?
The Switcher, as it has affectionately been dubbed, is set to demand 32GB of space, operating at p handheld and p docked. While this port is certainly impressive, the fact that such graphical compromises needed to be made had me a little worried. In a game that boasts some of the vastest and most visually stunning locations in gaming history I've loaded up the game solely to ride around Skellige before, so I'm speaking from experience here becoming fully immersed in the atmosphere is all a part of the experience.
I think about The Witcher 3 on Switch in the same way that I think about the announcement of the upcoming The Witcher Netflix series — with both excitement and hesitation. It's great that we are getting more Witcher — just make it good, please. I was given the opportunity to get my hands-on with the handheld version of The Witcher 3 in an attempt to size up this miniaturisation of a classic and, much to my relief, it looks like CD Projekt RED has only gone and done it.
Racing against Ciri and sparring with Vesemir in the games' tutorial felt just like The Witcher 3 that I have sunk over 50 hours into. After chatting with Piotr Chrzanowski, a senior creative producer at CD Projekt Red, it's clear that this is the reaction the studio was looking for. That we don't change anything compared to the other platforms," Chrzanowski tells me. After getting back in the swing of both the steel and silver, I quickly found myself running around the well-travelled roads of Velen, fighting beasts and riding Roach to the pubs that I know are known to house Gwent players.
Just like the good ol' days. The change of controller, while awkward at first, didn't stop the game feeling welcomingly familiar, too. The translation to joycons feels thought out, and after the tutorial, it meant that the fighting remained between me and the monster, rather than me and the controls. Combat and sign casting is still as satisfying as ever, with L allowing you to select from your deadly roster of signs and ZR to influence minds or burn them to a crisp, depending on where the mood takes you.
It has been confirmed that the game will support the use of the pro controller, which I will personally be opting for over the joycons, if only to make the long hours of combat more comfortable and instinctual.
Here's how The Witcher 3 on Switch compares to PlayStation 4
But those fluent in joycon will probably find the controls to be intuitive and satisfying, particularly in a game where combat mastery feels so rewarding. As I mentioned up top, The Witcher 3 has lost some of its visual fidelity in its transition to Switch.
That was to be expected, but what I didn't expect was just how great the game would look regardless. While the p resolution in handheld mode does mean that The Witcher 3 is noticeable less sharp, the depth and detail to its spaces still shines through.
That you get the same experience, and that is something that I'm focusing on, that I think people will be focusing on. While the visuals may look softer, you shouldn't expect the same from the way the game plays. The number of enemies and NPCs occupying the game's spaces remains the same, leaving the world as dangerous as ever. The only sacrifices CD Projekt Red was willing to make were small decisions that wouldn't affect the core gameplay, with the studio having to pull back the scope of the visuals to maintain a consistent frame rate and performance.
If you are focusing on numbers, you will always find something that has to be changed to fit into the memory required, but I don't think that really impacts the gameplay. The announcement confirms rumours from early this year which were generally dismissed by analysts including my own article on the subject! As it turns out, CD Projekt Red has found a way to bring the game to the Switch, although it has meant making some concessions when it comes to graphical quality.
A leaked store page had appeared to point to a Switch port of the game five months ago, but at the time, the prospect of The Witcher 3 on the the Switch seemed a lot less likely. Indeed, a recent statement at the time from ZeniMax Online Studios was that they would be unable to bring the Elder Scrolls: Online to the Switch for the same reason; the game was simply too large. However, the trailer clearly shows a sharp downgrade in graphical quality, particularly on the scenery and background.
It now seems likely that CD Projekt Red cut the file size down by sacrificing graphical quality.
Ultimately, this may not be much of a problem for the Nintendo Switch. After all, the console has a smaller screen where lower-quality graphics may not be so obvious.
Of course, it may be more obvious if the game is connected to a larger screen through the Switch dock. However, for Switch owners who have been waiting for a chance to play the award-winning title, they will finally get their chance before the end of the year!

The same can be said for dense woodland areas or thick forests, though I often found myself too preoccupied marveling at the bobbing of Geralt's hair in the breeze or the truly gorgeous lighting effects that somehow still work in the palm of my hand. That magic quickly fades, however, when you dock the Switch to play it on the big screen.
On a larger p or 4k display, The S Witcher 3 looks rough. Textures are muddy, trees appear to be made more of cotton candy than of leaves, and the jagged edges on everything around you serve as a constant reminder of just how much we take good anti-aliasing for granted. While the errant framerate stutter or camera clip may occur, performance in both docked or handheld mode is reasonably solid. I enjoy how the balance of heavy and light attacks meshes with the use of simple magic, and I never found any of that particularly frustrating on a design level — my failures as Geralt have always felt earned.
In handheld mode on Switch, however, there are some issues that make controlling the Witcher a bit more of a headache. It was only a real problem in more difficult battles, such as Contract monsters or certain bosses, but was enough to make the already lengthy loading screens between death and another attempt a bit more frustrating.
On a full-size screen, however, it suffers to the point where it looks more reminiscent of the generation than the current one. The Witcher 3.
